Invitation to International Graduate Summer School in Aeronautics and Astronautics in Beijing

After a long journey, Tugba Akman is very excited to finally arrive at the university and explore the new surroundings. The Beihang University of Aeronautics and Astronautics with approximately 30,000 students and 14,000 researchers has been the first university in China to focus on Aerospace Engineering. The spacious campus offers a lot: from working areas with the latest high tech equipment to sports facilities. There even is an aerospace museum on campus, the Beijing Air and Space Museum. After taking in the first impressions, the following days continue with lectures by international professors giving an overview on various topics, e.g. “Sustainable Green Aviation” and “Navigation and Control”.

Thinking outside the box: research lectures and intercultural dialogue

The long lunch breaks provide the perfect opportunity to get to know the Summer School participants from all over the world, including China, Japan, Australia, Brazil and South Africa. Lively conversations spring up with everyone curiously exchanging questions on campus life, their research topics and cultural differences. The atmosphere is positive during the students’ presentations on their research topics. After each presentation, there is time to discuss the respective topic in more detail. The variety of specialisations poses a challenge due to presenting one’s own work to researchers with different backgrounds.

New insights during campus and city tours

Lab tours grant insight into Beihang University’s current research. PhD candidates enthusiastically present their research area and share both challenges they face and new ideas. An impressively large screen in particular highlights the research in the field of virtual reality.

On the weekend, there is also time for sightseeing walks to explore China’s capital city from a different perspective. A tour of the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace in the heart of Beijing gives a close-up look into a piece of contemporary history.

For Tugba Akman the International Graduate Summer School of Aeronautics and Astronautics has been a great opportunity to gain first experience in an international research environment and, through close collaboration, benefit from professional and intercultural exchange.
